How To Apply Snow To Your Layout
Response to Question Topic
I'm looking for information on modelling snow and winter scenes in HO scale. Any tips or advice would be appreciated.

Summary

To Add A Little Excitement To Yor Layout, Just Add A Little Winter.

In every life, a little snow must fall. And on every layout, it should also snow a bit! By adding a little winter to your layout, you will give your layout a feeling of being a bit more “real”. In fact, as I write this article it IS snowing outside!!

Adding some snow to your layout is simple and easy. They’re a number of commercial products that are made just for this, and they work great. I’m not exactly sure what this product is made from, but it’s very light and has a slight shine to it.

To get started, all you need is the snow product and a small sieve. The hardest part of adding some winter is deciding how much you want. I only wanted a “winter highlight”, so the snow is only going on the top of my mountain.

Start by putting some “snow” in your sieve and carefully shake a bit at the very top of the area you want covered. With this product, a little goes a long way. Be VERY careful where you put this stuff, as it is very hard to get completely off again. You can always add more snow later if you like.

The beauty of this snow product is you don’t need to glue it down. It seems to like to stick to itself and will stay in place unless disturbed by something. I would be careful with the snow any place your trains will be running. This product can get EVERY WHERE. Which would include inside your locomotives if you let it.

As you work your way down the hill, feather out the edges lighter and lighter. Continue this until you return to an area where there is no snow at all. The entire application of snow on my mountain took all of about 30 minutes, which included cleaning up. (I spilled some, which took half the time to clean up!)

What a great way to add a little “depth” to your layout. Adding snow is easy, fast, and good fun. Now all I need is to find some N-Scale size skiers!
